The World’s First Diploid Recombinant Inbred Potato Population

The tetraploid potato is tremendously tricky to breed—it has four sets of 12 chromosomes and 40 agronomic traits that are necessary for commercial production. The diploid potato offers an answer for quicker, more reliable breeding, but it’s widely self-incompatible. Here, breeders at Michigan State University detail in Crop Science the first ever diploid recombinant inbred line population of potato, complete with Colorado potato beetle resistance, for use in breeding operations and genetic mapping.
